Bill Gibbons'
A+ Teacher Initiative
The backbone of any quality public school is a strong faculty of teachers. In order to improve K-12 education in Tennessee, we must bring more top-notch teachers into our classrooms. One way I plan on achieving this is through my “A+ Teacher Initiative.” Given our current teacher shortage, young people in our state have a chance to serve. The A+ Teacher Initiative gives some of our brightest high school seniors an incentive to choose teaching as a profession.
Here are the basics of the initiative:
•State use of lottery money to pay full tuition to a Tennessee public university, with priority being placed on teaching in a failing Tennessee public school for four years following their graduation from college and maintain a certain grade point average.
•Highly competitive program that would only select a few students per year.
The program accomplishes two primary objectives that both significantly help our state.
•Infusing our classrooms with highly capable college graduates who have the potential to be first-rate teachers.
•Keeping some of Tennessee’s top high school scholars in state for their college years.
This plan is not the entire solution to fixing our education system in Tennessee, but it is one positive step in that pursuit. As governor, I will focus on ensuring that every child in Tennessee receives a quality education. I believe the A+ Teacher Initiative will help us reach that goal.
